COP28: Alan Newby

"I think cross industry collaboration is essential. As we look to solving the wider problem of decarbonization and aviation we can do our bit to improve engine technologies, but you've got to start looking beyond that into the fuel system providers and then ultimately into green energy as well. You can't just solve it within your own area."

Alan Newby, Group R&T Director at Rolls Royce, advocates an integrated approach to solving emissions from the aviation sector, pointing out that in order to reach net zero aviation by 2050 we need to consider the impact of areas like energy and financial policy. One of the things he found most encouraging at COP was getting a chance to hear about different aspects of the transition across all sectors, and think holistically about the whole solution rather than individual elements of it.
