Royal Timeline: Five Decades Of Speeches

As Prince of Wales, the King maintained a consistent vision for how we can live in harmony with nature

Six years ago, when he was Prince of Wales, the King launched the Sustainable Markets Initiative and its video platform RE:TV during a speech at Davos.

Founded on His Majesty’s long-standing vision of a sustainable future, the Sustainable Markets Initiative is guided by principles he has articulated consistently over decades. That vision was set out most clearly in 2020 and 2021, through a series of speeches and collaborations that continue to shape the SMI’s mission today, building on the themes he had explored over the previous decades.

While the speeches took place in different places at different times, their message is consistent – we must protect that which sustains us.

Since its launch, the Sustainable Markets Initiative has brought together business leaders, innovators and decision makers from around the world to accelerate the shift to a low-carbon economy – one in which both people and Nature can thrive. Across sectors and markets, the SMI has helped surface and support practical solutions that turn ambition into action.

The work His Majesty began decades ago still drives the Sustainable Markets Initiative, RE:TV, and many other organisations today. This rich legacy is worth continuing, and it’s never been more urgent for us to do so.
