Reimagining Deep Sea Cargo

"Sustainable shipping is possible, not in 15-20 years, but right now."

Global shipping company Höegh Autoliners transport everything from cars to agricultural machinery. Operating in a sector responsible for 3% of global emissions, they are determined to change the game.

As CEO Andreas Enger explains, innovation is already setting a new industry standard. During a recent fleet renewal, Höegh Autoliners designed and developed the world’s largest environmentally friendly car carrier – one with the ability to run on clean ammonia in the future.

This breakthrough could transform the face of deep sea cargo, but does high impact come at a similarly high cost? Not for these new builds. Only 5-10% additional investment is needed to create vessels with zero carbon capability.

The company is also retrofitting ships wherever possible, using solutions like biofuel and propellers to cut emissions across the board. As Andreas points out, with all the technology we need at our disposal, industry-wide change could be just over the horizon.
